Rarely does modern art experience pure talent colliding with
amazing work ethic, a humble down-to-earth persona, unending
dedication, and honest trustworthiness…not through self-promotion,
or promises, but rather, example after example of an artist
continually endeavoring to help their local art community prosper
and thrive...
Gil Jawetz, is precisely that rare artist. Painting professionally since 2004, Gil’s tenure aiding his community (donating paintings or proceeds) includes working with Recycled Love, BARCS (Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter), Paws 4 a Cause, Legacy Boxer Rescue, Barkin Arts NYC, Baltimore County Humane Society, Mid Atlantic German Shepherd Rescue, and the Maryland SPCA.
However, it's important to note Jawetz’s notoriety is not merely based on his willingness to aide charities... Since 2004, Gil has participated in nearly 30 shows | openings spanning the eastern seaboard from New York City to Brooklyn to Baltimore to Virginia…all the way to Miami Florida.
Gil’s work has been featured in the Baltimore Sun, Urbinate Magazine, Art Basel Miami Beach magazine, Fox45, WJZ (CBS), Maryland Public Television, NPR Baltimore (WYPR), New York Magazine, and the New York Daily News.
Even more impressive, despite Gil’s hectic schedule preparing for openings, he recently published his second book VooDoo Wedding (LuLu 2009), a 50-page manuscript highlighting 29 of his paintings.
VooDoo Wedding follows his first work Human(e) Beings (LuLu 2008), which showcases 89-pages of Gil's paintings of animals and people. Given Gil’s incredible talent, unmatchable work ethic, and "all around" great attitude, Mark Whistler was ecstatic with the 2008 invitation to contribute the forward to Human(e) Beings.
Whistler states, "It’s all too rare an artist shows up on your gallery step and instead of asking, 'how are you going to help me sell paintings?' instead inquires, ‘how can we work together to do something great and how can I help you?’ From the moment I first met Gil (when he also proudly showed me his Volvo with flames painted on the front!), I knew he was quite different from the bulk of painters who just don’t understand how much hard work is truly involved in being a successful full-time artist. Gil’s sincere personality and bold work ethic, in combination with his engaging painting style, ensures he will be an institution within the Eastern Seaboard Art Community (literally - on his own), for years to come."
