Vasco Gil da Costa
Ericeira • Portugal
Artist | Oil | Acrylic
Born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1953, Vasco Gil de Costa may very well be
one of Europe's most exceptional contemporary artists, quietly
creating a significant repertoire within the sleepy Portuguese
fishing village of Ericeira. In partnership with his wife
Filomena Almeida, Vasco is proprietor of the cliff-top restaurant,
Golfinho Azul (The Blue Dolphin - overlooking Sao Lourenco beach),
while also actively painting nearly five to nine hours each day.
With one glance at Gil de
Costa's Photorealist drawings, viewers find themselves stunned and
engaged with smooth, almost retro Photographic quality, while
speechless at the tens of thousands of obsessive-genius pen-strokes
(.10mm to 0.35mm) comprising each work.
Utilizing Pointillist and Cross-Hatch technique, Gil de Costa finds inspiration from 1940's
and 50's iconic Photographers such as: Eisenstaedt, Charles
Peterson, Lee Tanner , Jerry Stoul, and Val Wilmer.
Vasco Gil de Costa attempts to create "perfect tone" within each
work, focusing not just on the image itself; rather, the lighting,
content, feeling, emotion, and composition of each representation
of an era long forgotten within the 21st Century digital age.
Case in point, each of Gil de Costa's works can often take
two weeks to one month to complete. A hybrid of
Expressionism, Pointillism, Photo Realism, and Impressionism, Gil de
Costa's works maintain utmost integrity and tradition, while also embracing hints of
progressive modernism and postmodernism as well.
Vasco Gil de Costa maintains one of the greatest traits of bold
talent, often missed by so many others: humbleness. In a recent conversation with
Gil de Costa, the artist commented, "When we believe our work is the
greatest, that is when our work falls apart." Though amazingly
humble for all of his talent and success, Vasco's work tells a more
detailed story of a true Portuguese artist living his dreams and
passion, while continually creating a significantly impressive body
of work... Vasco is truly a rare find within increasingly hurried and
rushed world, given his patient lifelong dedication and brilliant
talent clearly displayed within his work, community, and culture.
